Push the coverage-affecting appearance values onto a node's pick material.
opacity and alpha_cutoff are the two visual values the pick pass reads (they
are the whole coverage term and the cutout threshold — §6.5), and the layers panel
can change either at runtime. Without this the pick pass would keep the
load-time values: dragging opacity below the cutoff would dissolve the mesh on
screen while leaving every triangle pickable.
A no-op for a node with no pick material (picking disabled, or a test-built node).
Returns whether a real mesh pick material was updated, so callers can invalidate
the cached pick buffer for meshes only — the other geometry types (whose pick
coverage this never touches) get false and skip the needless offscreen re-render.
