The blending mode a mesh node asks for, defaulting to opaque (§6.3).
The ?? 'opaque' is the whole mesh-specific asymmetry — the three siblings all
default to additive — so it lives in ONE place, read by both the visual material
and the pick material. Two copies would be two chances for the pick pass to apply
a cutout the screen does not, or vice versa.
